Qualifications:

 

College hours for Title I campus 48 required or a score of 464 on the ParaPro test

College hours, high school diploma or GED for Non-Title I campus  

Ability to work with children with disabilities

Ability to follow verbal and written instruction

Ability to communicate effectively

Knowledge of general office equipment

Paraprofessional aide certificate required once employed

CPI certification once employed

Primary Purpose:

 

Assist the teacher with instructional needs as appropriate

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Adhere to federal, state and local policies and procedures related to special education paraprofessionals and child care facilities.
  2. Participate in planned in-services and professional growth activities.
  3. Assist in carrying out the instructional program.
  4. Assist in maintaining confidential student records and data for determining student progress.
  5. Assist in preparation, use and maintenance of instructional materials and equipment.
  6. Assist with teacher-planned activities, exercises and drills.
  7. Assist when needed in helping students in self-care activities such as feeding and toileting.
  8. Assist in implementing the therapy programs which may require lifting and positioning.
  9. Attend professional meetings as required.
  10. Assist in implementing behavior intervention strategies
  11. Assist in providing no-medical procedures such as feeding tubes and other interventions as necessary for the student.
  12. Provide instructional support and implement instructional accommodations for students.
  13. Other duties as assigned.
  14. Other SHARS Duties as assigned.
  15. Provide Personal Care as identified in applicable student IEPs.

Equipment Used:

 

Personal computer, copier, printer, calculator, laminator and Smart board.  Washer/dryer, microwave, dishwasher.  Familiar with wheelchairs, wheelchair lifts, wheelchair restraints, electric changing tables, Hoyer lift, assistive technology equipment-voice output device, various physical therapy equipment, gastrointestinal tube (g-tube).

 

Working Conditions:

 

Maintain emotional control under stress. Regular district-wide travel to multiple work locations as assigned; moderate stooping, pushing, pulling, lifting and carrying. May be required to lift and transfer students to and from wheelchair or assist with positioning students with physical disabilities.  Prolonged use of a computer and repetitive hand motions.  Occasional prolonged and irregular hours. May be required to lift and position students with physical disabilities (heavy lifting greater than 50 pounds); control behavior through physical restraint; and assist non-ambulatory students. Exposure to biological hazards, noise, microwaves.
