Qualifications:

 

Master’s degree in Counselor education

Valid Texas counseling certificate

Valid Texas Special Education certificate

Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) credentials (preferred)

Minimum three years classroom teaching experience

Knowledge of Counseling theories, counselor ethics and school counseling procedures, including, student appraisal, and career development

Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior

 

Primary Purpose:

 

To provide counseling and educational support as required by the counseling as a related service model in conjunction with student and campus needs.

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Provide consultation to parents, campus and district staff.
  2. Provide group and/or individual counseling to those students who demonstrate a need for this service.
  3. Implement counseling as a related service for students with an IEP.
  4. Report progress on IEPs as it relates to counseling as a related service.
  5. Assist in determining appropriate interventions to deal with problem situations (behavioral/emotional) in the academic environment and assist in evaluating the effectiveness of these interventions.
  6. Observe and consult with teachers/staff to provide classroom management strategies.
  7. Co-facilitate group counseling with campus counselors or other appropriately trained personnel.
  8. Develop and maintain knowledge and skills by engaging in professional development activities to support the knowledge of state and federal rules and regulations for Special Education.
  9. Provide recommendations to teachers, other staff members, and parents for behavioral management techniques or strategies for working with a student with behavioral needs.
  10. Provide crisis intervention services as needed.
  11. Assist in writing behavior intervention plans and individual education plans.
  12. Participate in Admission, Review, and Dismissal meetings as appropriate.
  13. Maintain current knowledge of diagnostic, legislative, and treatment issues which impact the delivery of school psychological services.
  14. Report parent concerns, advocate concerns, campus administrator concerns, and/or high-profile cases to the Coordinator for Psychological Services and the Director for Specialized Programs.
  15. Plan, prepare, conduct, and facilitate trainings based on collaborated needs.
  16.  Attend and participate in required department/district meetings, staff development, and informative sessions and be prepared to share.
  17. Additional duties as assigned by Instructional Officer for Psychological Services, Directors, etc.

 Equipment Used:

 

Interactive white board, computer, printer, copier, overhead projector, DVD/VCR, and other emerging technologies which are particularly unique to the assignment.  Instructional and productivity software, as required by the assignment.

 

Working Conditions:

 

Frequent in-district travel, ability to multitask many projects at one time, and maintain emotional control under stress. Varied stressful interpersonal situations and crisis management. Utilize nonviolent crisis intervention techniques. Occasional prolonged and irregular hours. Moderate lifting and carrying 15-44 pounds weekly. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and hauling materials for counseling and testing.
